Shrimp and Clam Cacciatore with Linguini (for 2)
One thing I learned early is that you can't re-create a grandmother's recipes. No matter how meticulously you follow step-by-step notes scribbled on a napkin, it can't be done. My grandmother's meals are intertwined with childhood memories of garlicky tomato sauce on the stovetop, Dean Martin on the 8-Track and pasta pasta pasta. I can't duplicate the smell of her kitchen, the pinch on my cheeks and or how she tossled my hair -- let alone her recipes.
But try we must because food is what memories are made of. "Cacciatore" is one such memory; This rueful adaptation calls for shrimp and clams (in place off of chicken) simmering in a vegetable-laden sauce of tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, carrots, peppers, and garlic.
